75 parents of PR practitioners learn what their kids do for a living

New York, NY – For years, it’s been an inside joke among public relations practitioners that our family members have very little understanding of the public relations industry.  In fact, a study recently conducted by Hunter Public Relations found that 45 percent of the agency’s family members surveyed think that creating a print advertisement and producing a TV commercial were typically handled by a PR executive.  Only 11 percent of those surveyed said they have an excellent understanding of their child/family member’s job as a PR executive, and 85 percent wish they had a better understanding of what their child/family member does for a living.

Hunter PR decided to do something about it.  In an effort to eliminate the confusion surrounding public relations and to play host to the parents who nurtured our exceptional staff, the agency held its first-ever Bring Your Parents To Work Day on Friday, April 23.  This single-day event provided parents and loved ones insight into the industry by offering three “PR 101” courses in Hunter PR’s areas of expertise: brainstorming, media training and social media.  In addition to these PR crash courses, parents were offered four fun electives to introduce them to the range of lifestyle brands Hunter PR represents:  whiskey tasting, wine tasting, gift wrapping, and recipe development.

Inspired by Take Your Children to Work Day celebrated nationally earlier in the week, Bring Your Parents to Work Day was the brainchild of Hunter PR’s managing Partner, Grace Leong.  “We are very proud of the strategic and creative work we do as public relations practitioners, and we wanted our family members to be able to share in our pride in the profession,” said Leong.  “Through Bring Your Parents to Work Day, we hope to show our loved ones what a typical day is like and hope they leave with a better understanding of our agency and its culture of client service.”

As evidenced by numerous posts to Hunter PR’s Facebook page, Bring Your Parents to Work Day was an overwhelming success. Said one proud parent, Patty Bayham-Mazier, “I loved spending the day learning about my son’s field of work. I was so impressed wiht everyone and I am so proud that my son Danny is a part of such a bright, energetic and fun-loving group of people. Social Media 101 even inspired me to set up a Facebook page!!!”
